UN General Assembly passes resolution calling for jewish residents to vacate Jerusalem Old City within a year

The UN general assembly passed a resolution that calls for jewish residents of Jerusalem Old City to vacate in order to reestablish the lines that existed in 1949.

It passed 124-14 with 43 countries abstaining. The US was among the 14 nations that opposed the resolution and was the only major world power to do so. Canada, Germany, the UK, Australia, and Italy were among the countries that abstained. The resolution would also ban certain arms sales for equipment that might be used in the territory covered by the resolution.

General Assembly resolutions have no legal force, but the resolution’s passage on Wednesday is expected to be used in international courts and other fora to seek additional action against the Jewish state.

It is widely expected that the Palestinians will request that the U.N. Security Council take up the issue. Security Council resolutions are binding, but the United States would be expected to thwart such an effort, including with its veto power.
